Airlines reluctant to fly to alternative airport in Kaduna

Nigeria’s capital has been cut off by air as the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja closed its one runway for at least six weeks for repairs. That’s forced flights to be either cancelled, or diverted nearly 200 kilometers North to Kaduna, lengthening travel times for passengers. Flights to the airport stopped at midnight on Tuesday, pending the start of long overdue work to resurface its old, potholed runway. An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787 from Addis Ababa, which ordinarily would have landed in Abuja, instead landed in Kaduna. Ethiopian Airlines is the only foreign carrier to switch routes to Kaduna. Others, including British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines and South African Airways, have all declined to do so.
